ENISA: Security in online social networking services
On 25 October 2007, the European Network and Information Security Agency ( ENISA ) issued a Document on safety issues in online social networking services and related recommendations. In this document, the above Service points out the advantages and risks of data security arising from the operation of such websites.
This highlights the risks associated with specific problems, such as the collection of large volumes of data relating to service users, which data may fall into the hands of extortionists and spammers. In addition, person photos can be associated with user profiles, while other underlying hazards concern, among other things, identity theft, monitoring and harassment and other online crimes.
The recommendations proposed by the Agency refer to the review of the legal framework and the introduction of specific regulations, transparency in the policy of protection of personal data, and the training of users, especially young people and pupils, and raising public interest in these problems.
